With its bold ambitions to rise through the ranks of British football, AFC Wimbledon anticipated needing a bigger stadium.
WOO architects was appointed initially to help the club identify and assess new sites, primarily in Wimbledon, and to formulate a new stadium brief that reflected the fan ownership of the club.
The location identified for the stadium was only 250 metres from the historic Plough Lane site, on land that was to be part of the masterplan for a housing-led, mixed-use development by Galliard Homes.
WOO developed its concept design following extensive consultations involving the The Dons Trust, the supporters’ organisation that owns the club, and local residents.
The club aimed to create a stadium that would not only met the team’s needs, but would also serve as a community asset. WOO’s design for the stadium negotiated a complicated planning application on a constrained site. The stadium was completed based on our RIBA Stage 3 proposals under a design-build contract.
The current stadium has a capacity 9,200, with an approved option of expanding to a 20,000 seat, state-of-the art stadium.
